Weaning

Breastfeeding is the best thing for babies.

Weaning means the gradual replacement of breastfeeding with other foods and forms of feeding. The weaning process begins the first time the baby takes food from another source other than breast milk, either infant formula or solid foods.

The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends that children be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months.

The best time for weaning varies from child to child and should be decided by the mother. In all cases, there should be a slow, smooth transition to weaning so that the baby gets used to it and in turn avoids health problems in the mother, such as blocked milk ducts.
